So John originally recommended that I watch this movie a looooong time ago and I am just finally getting around to it now. He talked it up a lot, so I went into this movie with really big expectations, and I was not disappointed in the slightest. For a very brief summary of the movie; It is about a boy (Shoya Ishida) in 6th grade who bullies a new deaf student (Shoko Nishimiya) so much that she has to leave schools. The story continues when both of them are in high school, and Shoya tries to begin to make amends with Shoko. This description probably makes this movie seem cheesy or cliché, but it is really nothing of the sort. This movie is probably going straight to my top 5 to be completely honest, and adding anything else to my short summary would spoil some of the subtleties of the plot. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND that you watch it for yourself. To continue with what makes this movie so special (other than the story itself) is the soundtrack, characters, and animation. The soundtrack is based on mainly piano compositions, and it fits in perfectly with the most emotional scenes of the movie. What could be used as just reinforcement for an important scene instead makes it much more memorable. The animation throughout the movie is beautiful throughout, and it's obvious that a lot of time and dedication went into it. The characters in the movie are interesting because there are things that you like and hate about all of them. They may be good people, but all of them have flaws that they cant seem to overcome. At many times you wonder if the story will actually turn out the way that you hope, or if the characters will just fall back into their own insecurities and flaws. I went into this movie completely blind, and I think that's the best way to do it. Hopefully I didn't accidentally include any spoilers in my review; and once again I highly recommend that you watch this movie for yourself. Rating: Characters: 9/10 Soundtrack: 10/10 Animation (because camera shots don't *technically* apply here): 9.5/10 Plot: 10/10 Overall enjoyment: 10/10 Final rating: 9.7/10

This movie is basically the origin story for Captain America A.K.A. Steve Rogers (played by Christopher Evans). It is set in the time period of WW2, and Steve is a patriotic young man trying to enlist in the US army. He is turned down over and over again due to being small and rather sickly. He finally gets noticed by Dr.Erksine who sees his potential to be a great soldier. He is given a special serum dubbed "the super soldier serum" which transforms him from being sickly and small into a tall, buff, soldier. For the rest of the movie, he goes on to save hundreds of US soldiers, and take down the Nazi organization Hydra and it's leader, The red skull. At the end of the movie, after a plane crash into frozen water, he wakes up in the present. After escaping a (presumably) SHIELD facility he finds out that he has been asleep (or more accurately frozen solid) for 70 years and the movie ends. I have watched the Marvel movies in possibly the worst order possible. I only started getting interested after Guardians of the galaxy came out, so I watched everything up to avengers endgame without ever knowing the origin of most of the characters who starred in the movies. I can say now that some of the plot in those movies would have made a lot more sense had I actually seen this one first. This movie was actually a lot better than I thought it would be at first, especially since none of it was spoiled before I watched it *cough* Infinity War *cough*. I expected it to more like Steve Rogers worked hard to become a hero, not that he was turned into one with a serum. One thing I really enjoyed about this movie was the cinematic action shots, like the ones during the scene of the train on the icy mountain. Another thing I thought was really cool was that at a few times, Red skull would see Captain America though black and white security camera footage, and then it would cut back and forth between the scene from Captain America's POV and the security cam POV. Even though this was a tiny part in the movie, it somehow made the scenes it occurred in more memorable for me. I think that establishing a rating system for my blog would be fun so the categories will be: plot shot selection and score characters overall enjoyment For this movie: Plot: 7.5/10 Shot selection and score: 7/10 characters: 8.5/10 Overall enjoyment: 7/10 Final rating: 7.5/10 |
